  • CommentaryFor this relatively small brass casting, one of the artist’s masterpieces, Belling transformed the movements of dancing or wrestling bodies into an almost abstract formal language. The symbiotic interlocking of two bodies, here presented as an Expressionist depiction of an erotic theme, was at the same time a study for the making of larger statues, as he had already done in 1918 (›Der Mensch‹) and 1919 (›Dreiklang‹). The sculptor’s Expressionist-symbolic way of working was influenced less by the strict formal language of the Cubists and more by Alexander Archipeno’s elegant and decorative sculptures in the 1920s.
Two greatly abstract human figures – the one figure characterized as male with jags and edges, the other as female with voluminous curves – are bound together as in a fight and form a three dimensional, almost acrobatic circle. »Eroticism« Rudolph Belling wrote in a letter to the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim, »well, to each his own. I was inspired for this years ago on the banks of a frog pond during mating season.«
