  • CommentaryThe torso of Ramses II (1279-1213 B.C.) belongs to the ›Standard-Bearing‹ type. Characteristic of this type is the divine staff in front of the body. The soft modulation of the muscles and the slight paunch also suggest this rare type of figure from the repertoire of Egyptian sculpture. Going by the inscriptions, the staff was dedicated to Amun, the god of herds, pastures and their fertility. The missing emblem at the end of the staff was therefore probably the head of a ram. On the rear column, together with the three names of Ramses II, reference is made to the purpose of the ›divine staff‹: It was carried in processions during festivals. This type of figure was most widespread during the Ramsesside period, over 20 such standard bearing statures are known. They were each dedicated to a god and a temple and also crowned with different emblems.
