  • CommentaryThis monumental cup deserves attention due to its representative size, its form and its quite rich decoration. The solid foot, the broad, extended bowl with flat bottom and the handles continuing the curve of the outside indicate that this belongs to the Andokides group. The cup form itself had not long been in use at this time. Belonging to this type are the two large pairs of eyes on the outside of the cup as well. Along the lip of the cup, around a Gorgoneion, an outdoor symposium with drastic scenes is depicted. This complex inner frieze, drawn in detail, is extremely rare in Attic cups; worldwide only three other examples are known. In 1975, with the support of the Krupp-Jubiläumsstiftung Paul Vogt succeeded in extending the Museum Folkwang’s collection of Greek vases founded by Karl Ernst Osthaus.
