  • CommentaryOne special way of making Japanese ceramics is the Raku-technique, still credited to a legendary collaboration between the potter Chôjirô and Sen no Rikyû, but in fact was introduced into Japan by Chinese immigrants. The name Raku is taken from a symbol for Juraku, a district in Kyôto. This special tea bowl appears to be a sculpture in its form and working. The soft and round surface, its dynamic form which was intentionally indented is decisive for the bowl’s haptic quality. The porous body is covered with a lead glazing and fired at low temperatures. In the ranking of value, tea bowls from Raku for the tea ceremony came out on top.
