  • CommentaryIn 1900, the musician and keen bicyclist Maurice de Vlaminck became friends with André Derain. Together they rented a studio in Chatou, north of Paris, where Vlaminck had been living since 1892. In the second half of the 19th Century this town, with its banks of the Seine and ‘Maison Fournaise’ a restaurant on an island, was a favourite place for a number of Impressionists, including Monet, Sisley, Morisot, Manet and Renoir. It is due to them that the island is now named the Île des Impressionistes (Island of Impressionists). A discovery of the works of van Gogh, and an invitation from Matisse to participate with him and Derain in the Salon des Indépendents, strengthened Vlaminck’s resolve to become a painter. The painting’s motif is a streetcorner in the village of Carrières-sur-Seine near Paris which Vlaminck captured with rapid, broad brushstrokes and ‘pure’ tube paints, which had just become modern. For this impetuous style, contemporary critics created the term ‘Fauves’, a catchword similar to ‘Impressionists’. “Fauvism was not an invention nor a stance, but rather a way of being, of acting, thinking and breathing”. (Maurice de Vlaminck)
