  • CommentaryThe Belgian State Railway maintained many connections within Europe, with Ostende an important hub. Many trains ended or stopped there (i.e. trains coming from Paris heading towards Belgian and Dutch seaside resorts) or left from here.

The upper part of the poster shows a situation in a train station; travellers are saying goodbye, others are waiting for fellow travellers, service personnel are rapidly loading baggage…Marfurt resolves this scene in contrasting colour fields, with the cutout-like colour fields schematizing train and travellers without ignoring the emotional aspect. His design is both factually oriented as well taking up the chic of Art Déco.

The lower part shows a schematic network map. Some luxury trains are specially marked. The design, reduced to coloured lines, points and names, seemingly anticipates the pictogram depictions of modern transport networks.
