  • CommentaryAt the end of the 1940s, about at the same time as the American Jackson Pollock, Pierre Soulages presented to the public his abstract, gesturally made paintings. They show broad, black lines against a white background crisscrossing each other in such a way that an image recalling letters resulted.
Around 1955, Soulages distanced himself from the type of informal painting and tried other possibilities of transforming motifs of movement into painting. In place of criss-crossing and broken off lines there appeared uniform color traces that come together to form dark, in parts black frames or fields out of which lighter colors, applied with gentle brushstrokes, glow. This creates a pictorial space whose different layers are located between the surface recognizable as the color carrier and a deep black.

The painting in Essen, shown on the occasion of the first documenta in 1955 in Kassel, shows that quiet monumentality and energetic charging that Soulages aimed for with this new method: »Movement is no longer described, it is tension, movement in the potency, that is dynamic.«
