  • CommentaryOpalka’s works are notations of a life-long counting and time trickling away. The French-Polish artist decided in 1965 to write down numbers, beginning with the number 1, on large canvases and each time to continue until physical and mental exhaustion. Opalka’s panels with a conspicuously amount of numbers are called ›Details‹.

The ›Details‹ achieve a tremendous density and beauty, especially impressive in the early painting in Essen. The calligraphy of individual numbers, the surging and subsiding in characteristic style, the changing intensity of color and the trace of the brush create and lively and vibrating texture. Nothing in the painting betrays the physical torture of the act of painting. Generally at night, often standing for hours »like a worker in a factory« (Opalka), with weakening eyes, the artist implemented his concept with great discipline. Opalka has lightened the grey tone of his paintings since the 70s. He now paints white numbers on a white background. In 1972 he also began to record himself speaking the numbers. After every day’s work he photographed himself in an open white shirt and with an expression as similar as possible.
