  • CommentaryBefore Joan Miró turned to Surrealism at the beginning of 1924, he had developed his own, unmistakable variation of Cubism which he used especially for portraits and landscapes inspired by his Spanish homeland. It was during this phase that made this portrait of his friend Vicente Nubiola. The painting shows a detailed, colorful, almost Fauvist formal language, distinguishing it quite clearly from contemporary Cubist works by Picasso and Braque. In Miró’s paintings of those years, viewers could feel the strength of the southern sunlight.
Miró formed the landscape in the background out of triangles and isometric arcs which together build a flat pattern. A still life arranged on the table next to the figure also shows Miró’s taste for the decorative, something possibly inspired by traditional Spanish arts. From this finely structured drawing, the artist creates a lingering rhythm which fills the painting and hints at that naivety and gentleness that Miró would retain throughout the rest of his creative life, even when he was continually, intensely occupied with avant-garde pictorial conceptions.
