  • CommentaryThe ever more expressive, impasto facture of the late works reveals just how drastically the artist’s perception of his earlier paintings was changing. Towards the end of his life, the motif became more and more a reflection of his own mental state, as is apparent in the portrait of his son in ›Thomas in Rüstung‹ (Thomas in Armor), painted in the year of his death. Here, Corinth’s sculpting brushstrokes follow the material texture of the surfaces while the forms of the figure in armor fragment, become increasingly vague and abstract before our very eyes. To Corinth, capturing reality becomes a metaphor for the experience of existence itself.
