  • CommentaryVery soon after his return from the South of France in 1947 – it was his first trip after the end of the war – Max Beckmann began to work on this painting inspired by the view from his hotel room of the Promenade des Anglais. The six-kilometer long reinforced ocean side promenade has its roots in an early 19th century initiative, when the area around Nice was discovered by the English, Germans and French for its mild climate, attracting many visitors especially in the winter months. Even today the town's most elegant hotels are located there, including the Hotel Ruhl, the Royal Luxembourg, the Hotel Negresco and - at 27 Promenande des Anglais – the Westminster, where the Beckmanns had stayed.
The figure of an elegantly dressed woman draws the viewer’s gaze into the picture, whose darkly luminous coloring is illuminated by a few lights. Probably the scene shows the moment just before leaving for the restaurant, a large hall where the hotel guests met every evening for a sumptuous dinner.
