  • CommentaryAfter training as a clerk in London between 1857 and 1861, Sisley joined the Paris studio of Charles Gleyre in 1862, where Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir and Jean-Frédéric Bazille also worked. The four painters left the school in 1863 to work en plein-air. From 1871, Sisley lived in seclusion in the countryside, in Voisins-Louveciennes, in Marly-le-Roi, in Sèvres and from about 1882 in Moret-sur-Loing. It was there, viewed from the Porte de Bourgogne – that he painted this view of the bridge in the snow.
