  • CommentaryAdolph Menzel began working in his father's printshop relatively early on, already preparing lithographs for illustrated books as a fourteen year old. After his father's death in 1832, his son continued on with the business to ensure a living for his family. In the following years he produced a number of series of paintings especially on themes of Prussian history, of which ‘History of Frederick the Great’ (1843 – 1849) is still the best known one. With his large format history paintings such as ‘Voltaire in the Court of Frederick II of Prussia’ (1850) or ‘The Flute Concert’ (1850/1852) – Menzel continued in the same vein and so gained recognition as a painter as well.
Parallel to these, from the middle of the 1840's he produced small paintings of interiors, views over Berlin and street scenes. Initially ignored by the public, ‘Stairwell by Nightly Illumination’ belongs to this group.
The casualness of the motif calls to mind at first a photographic snapshot, but is due to a construction of the image aiming exactly for this effect. The window forms a central axis whose symmetrical interior structure are overlapped on the right side by the stairway. A strong contrast of light and dark in the upper half of the painting pushes the viewer's gaze downward to the weakly illuminated stairs.
