  • CommentaryThe painting shows the celebrated baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure (1830-1914) at the Paris Opera in the title role of the opera Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas, which he played more than 100 times from 1868. Faure was also a famous art collector, who from 1873 was especially fond of the works of Manet; at one point he owned 68 of the painter’s works.
It was therefore logical for Faure to contract the painter friend he admired to portray him in the role of his greatest triumph. Manet accepted the contract, which, however, proved to be a strain on their friendship. The painter needed almost forty sittings in the winter of 1876/77for the painting, its completion thus dragging on well beyond the agreed date: Manet restarted the painting nine times, destroyed three versions and always, according to Faure, changed the painting completely after a sitting.
Manet shows the singer in what is probably the third scene of the first act, in which Hamlet draws a dagger and swears revenge in front of his father’s ghost. While in early studies a large part of the stage is shown, the painter’s interest in the final version focuses totally on the person in the role of Hamlet, without, however, ignoring the theatrical elements of costume and pose. Manet’s intensive study of Valazquez’s works had led him to isolate depictions of human figures against a monochrome, spatially undefined background from the 1860’s. Faure did not like the painting he had ordered, feeling that it was not sophisticated art and would not gain public respect because as it trivialized the theme. Faure refused to accept it, but Manet declined to change anything, convinced he had found a successful solution for the theme. He wrote to his friend Antonin Proust: »Nonetheless it is hard to imagine how difficult it is to place a single figure on canvas and to concentrate the interest on this figure to the extent that he appears alive and in the flesh.«
