  • CommentaryAfter a first apprenticeship with the historical painter Hermann Becker in his home town of Cologne, Leibl went to Munich, at the time the most important center of art in the German Empire. From 1864 to 1869 he studied at the academy there, under Arthur von Ramberg and Karl von Piloty among others. Leibl turned to portrait painting, which was less strictly regulated than the academic forms of genre and history. Of decisive influence of Leibl’s artistic development was his meeting Gustave Courbet in 1869, which was followed by an extended stay in Paris. There he got to know contemporary French art, training himself with the works of the Realists and Impressionists.
‘Portrait of the Daughter of Mrs. Klessing’ is characteristic of the works Leibl produced after his return from Paris (1870). A female figure, dressed in black, the high, red-brown back of the chair and a diffuse black-brown background together form an extensive composition in which a few details – face, hands, bunch of keys and pouch – set luminous accents. His flowing brush style and nuanced tones of the dark colors indicate Leibl’s knowledge of Édouard Manet’s paintings of a few years before.
