  • CommentaryAlexej Jawlensky is the only artist to have focused on the human visage in a strongly varied way over such a long period of time. Working with a basic framework of facial features starting around 1917, Jawlensky employed various materials, such as chalk, gouache, watercolor, and oil. But he also varied his approach, using restrained nuances of color and glaring variegation, fine lines alternating with rough planarity, or mimetic reproduction and systematized form. Jawlensky thus arrived at a radicality of suggestiveness, as in the work ›Letztes Licht‹ (Final Light). The faces fill the format of the pictorial carrier, with hair only attaining a framing function, while the insinuated neck serves to localize the composition in a conventional way. Jawlensky’s heads are posited at the dawn of metamorphosis: the face becoming a mask, eyes and mouth closed, nose and ears increasingly reflecting geometrically stylized abstraction.
Indeed, the traditional face is translated into a generalizing and yet celebratory mask, comparable to an icon.
