  • CommentaryEmil Nolde’s artistic occupation with Hamburg lasted all of a few weeks in 1910: Nolde resided in a small hotel directly on the harbor, from where he went out in a hectic daily search for motifs which he immediately recorded in printed works. In his autobiography, he described this period: “With a pinasse full of people I sailed around, working, I observed the bustle on the pier, still working, and in the evening I placed the plates in the corrosive acid, three hours was sufficient (…) The etchings produced had noise and thunder, intoxication and smoke and life, but only a little sun.” In these works, Nolde did not focus on the people he met, concentrating instead on evidence of their life and work along and on the water: boats and ships, whose trails of smoke appear bright against the silhouette of harbor buildings, were just as interesting for Nolde as the pier with its remarkable pillars. With their intensity and movement full of contrasts, the works made in the Hamburg harbor are among the high points of Expressionist prints.
